I recall going over a number of blogs and
finding one that really interested me, it was group 7 but as I look back I
think the person who published it has removed it.
The post was basically about how in
another country, girls are being tested on whether or not they were virgins
(Reilly, 2013).
This really triggered my inner feminist
and boy did it enrage me.
I mean, so what if someone is a virgin or
not, how can someone be discriminated on anatomy? Boys would never be tested
for being a virgin or not, because its physically impossible to tell, so why am
I outed for my anatomy?
This is a real problem today, because the
double standards on sex are insanely high. The ideals of rape culture, cat
calling, and slut shaming still existing is disgusting.
Some people don’t realize how women are
still treated as objects. I was discussing with my friend the other day about
how horrible cat calling may be, how men would just call across the way “hey
sexy” or “Nice ass” or something equally inappropriate (why do they do that? it
wont make me feel any better about myself! it's more of a insult than a
compliment). A girl eavesdropping on us quickly added “but what if they just
wanted to say you were beautiful?”
And I just thought, how can someone be so
naïve? That is never, not ever the case. Why are we as a gender, a minority
even, is thought of as a show once we step out the door? We we’re not created
to be called at or to entertain the opposite sex, we are people. If you
want out attention, treat us like a person not a show.
What annoys me more is rape culture. How
easily fingers may be pointed at the victim.
The slut walk was something that really
caught my eye (BBC news, 2011) , it really enraged my because an actual cop's
advice was that if the rape victim wore much more "appropriate" clothing,
the deed might of been prevented another is how alcohol can excuse his
actions but condemn mine?
Excuse me
Does what I wear really make me more
eligible to some a heinous crime?
NO
If I were to wear a cloak and 500 sweaters
and pants in the middle of summer, I could still be raped; it’s all about the
rapist not the victim
Whist skimming through the Internet I have
found a campaign called "I need feminism because" (Buxton, 2013)
But the one that really stood out was
"I need feminism because, as a girl
if was taught not to get raped, when boys should be taught not to rape"
Little girls in the world are constantly
taught to be the minor compared to men and it needs to stop, the worst part is
that most of the moral advice and influence come from home. If we were to reach
out to parents and break the gender differences, rape maybe reduced and
objectification of woman can finally disappear.
We need to start a ‘Global sisterhood’!
