"If Andrew and William got married on the 5th October of 2013, what day would be their 2 week anniversary be?"
Well, I have to admit that I've been obsessed with
What Would You Do videos. And this one really hit me hard.
It also made me think long and hard. I watched it and
thought, why did a lesbian couple cause so much commotion?
And after hours of contemplating I finally realised,
it's because it was something "rare" to see.
Which only made me want to hypothesize even more. I
then created a thesis of; the only way we can fix any form of inequality is to
make it common.
What I’m saying it that if we embrace the gay culture
to its full potential, it'll become a social norm and therefore won't grab any
unwanted attention.
I mean, still recall walking down the street with my
family and finding a lesbian couple making out freaked all of them out. If we
slowly had an uprising of more open gay couples there is a chance that a child
would walk down the street, see two men holding hands and not question them at
all. All they'll think is that they're in love.
A very blunt and dramatic example, If you walked out
of your door and saw a pink elephant, you would obviously look at it with wide
eyes and it’ll cause a commotion. But what if you walked out the door, and saw
a pink elephant everyday, you obviously care for it, you wouldn’t even look
twice.
I’m not saying that homosexuals are pink elephants so
to speak.
I'm saying the more we embrace homosexual culture, the
more normalized it will become, and therefore, seeing an average gay couple
eating dinner together, we wont gawk or stare, we wont even notice, it’ll
become apart of everyday life.
This is where education is put in place, which may
also tie in with the media. If we slightly altered the questions for our
children e.g. “If William and Andrew got married…” we can again normalize
homosexuality, creating a new indiscriminate generation.
A firm example of this is J.C. Penney, creating uproar
with their ad campaign shown below
As you can see they’re showing the everyday American
Family, happy partners with their kids.
They have received a wide number of hate and
complaints for these forward thinking ideas. Being told how disturbing it was
for displaying two men as fathers with their adoptive children shown above.
J.C. Penny apologized for their "offensive material"
And instead went for a different approach seen below.
A lesbian couple..
All i can say is, you go J.C. Penney's!!
This form of media and its wide impact on education
can make our society much more forward thinking and therefore we can revolutionize
our social spheres.
But sadly, although the ad campaign has caught my
heart, it obviously hasn't improved their market, lowering their revenue by 25%
and having to fire their CEO for their stunt (Family Research Centre, 2011).
By the end of it, J.C Penney shows a much more
negative effect to homosexuality rather than positive, it is clear that
homosexuality still isn’t ok.
This is a horrible message to send out to anyone,
especially teenagers finding themselves, I mean, some students are aware of
their sexuality but repress it to the point of mental illness and even suicide
(Plöderl, Faistauer & Fartacek, 2010).
Sometimes i still can't believe how shallow and backwards people can be.
